Are your headlights fixable?

You may have tried a few products here and there. You may have seen an infomercial on TV claiming with a simple wipe your headlights can permanently look like new again. You may have already spent over $50 in these trials, with almost no results to show for it. We are here to help.

Repairing your headlights correctly with lasting results is not an easy task. Headlights are generally made from a polycarbonate plastic, with a layer of clearcoat with UV protectant from the factory. Without the UV protection, the polycarbonate fades and yellows quickly, sometimes within a couple months or less in the sun. On some vehicles, the clearcoat will degrade and the bare polycarbonate will be exposed. On others, the clearcoat will fade, yellow or sometimes even crack due to the sun's damaging rays.

Some factory headlights last longer than others, and it is also dependant on how much time your vehicle spends in the sun. The bottom line is once they start to fade, it will only be a matter of time before it starts affecting the light output at night, and could cause an unsafe condition.

You have two options, repair or replace.

To replace your headlight housings is costly. With some more common vehicles you may find they can be replaced for under $300. Most of the time, however, this is not the case. You also may or may not be comfortable replacing them yourself. On quite a few vehicles these days, the front bumper may have to be removed to replace these housings.

So you don't want to tackle that? You are looking at paying up to $100 per hour in labor costs, on top of the hundreds more for the housings. The plus side to this option is you are starting with a brand new part again, and your wallet won't be so heavy and cumbersome.

The more feasible option is to repair the existing headlights. But with vast amount of products out there, you don't even know where to start, and you have no idea where to take your car if you want someone else to repair them.
